Kingston Communities Awards 2024

Queen’s Promenade Friends (QPF) were nominated for a Community Team Award – celebrating a group of people (volunteers or paid staff) who have made a positive change or achieved excellence in the Kingston Celebrating Communities Awards.

We didn’t win – there were 27 nominees – but we are all winners in our eyes! Well done to all the nominees and winners – and to all the teams in the category. What an amazing job you all do!

Here’s the nomination, and my celebration of our team of volunteers:

“Queen’s Promenade Friends stand out as shining examples of community spirit and collective action, making them ideal candidates for Kingston’s Celebrating Communities Awards 2024. Their unwavering dedication and collaborative efforts have completely revitalized the riverside, turning it into a vibrant and treasured space that everyone can enjoy, instilling a sense of pride and belonging among the community.

Beginning their journey in 2019, the Queen’s Promenade Friends embarked on a mission to rejuvenate sections of the riverside, which has held a significant place in the area since 1856. They started by restoring the overgrown caretaker’s hut and establishing a Pocket Park, and their efforts have since expanded to include the planting of numerous gardens. In 2023, they commissioned an art deco mural to cover a graffitied wall and created a series of new gardens, including  the popular Sensory Garden, transforming the entire landscape of the Promenade. Additionally, they’ve lovingly restored original Victorian terraced gardens, ensuring the area retains its historical charm. Their thoughtful approach to planting not only enhances the beauty of the riverside but also supports biodiversity and resilience to climate change.

At the heart of Queen’s Promenade Friends is a diverse group of individuals united by a shared goal: to enhance the beauty and functionality of their local riverside. Through their combined passion and commitment, they have spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at revitalizing and maintaining this beloved promenade.

What truly distinguishes the Queen’s Promenade Friends is their ability to inspire and mobilize others to join their cause. Through grassroots outreach and effective communication, they have garnered widespread support and engagement, harnessing the community’s collective strength to drive positive change. Their festival of sunflowers in 2023 encouraged locals to support their work and get involved themselves with the sowing of sunflowers, mass planting out and shared responsibility for watering and caring for them, along with the shared enjoyment in their beauty. Their inclusive approach has empowered residents to take ownership of their environment, fostering a sense of stewardship and community pride that extends beyond the riverside itself.

Queen’s Promenade Friends have demonstrated the transformative power of community-driven action, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape and creating a legacy that will endure for generations to come. Their collaborative efforts and unwavering commitment serve as a shining example of what can be achieved when communities come together for a common purpose.”
