Sunflower People

Overhead on the Prom on Saturday volunteer morning: little boy walking past the Queen’s Promenade Friends volunteers, wearing their hi-vis jackets: “Mummy Mummy, are those the sunflower people?” Love! Queen’s Promenade Friends, also known as the Sunflower People!

Our sunflower campaign has been an enormous success and has brought such joy to the community. Thank you all for accepting it with such joy and passion, from growing along with us with our Sow-along sunflowers campaign launched in March, to planting them out in May on The Big Help Out Coronation weekend, to the community taking selfies with them and posting them on social media.

We did have a few who didn’t respect the flowers and we lost a few flower heads from mindless vandalism, including the giant size platter sunflower in the concrete flower beds in River View Garden, but that hasn’t deterred us. We will attempt to grow them again next year. Stay tuned for announcements about sow-alongs and planting out again.

Here’s a selection of our favourite images for our ‘Triumph of Sunflowers 2023’:
